Observe before purchasing
Where does your cat choose to sleep now: high, low, enclosed, exposed, warm, cool, near people or away from them?
A cat may ignore an expensive bed and choose a cardboard box because location and enclosure matter as much as materials. Observe where the cat already sleeps before deciding what kind of resting accessory to add.

Location first
Quiet corners, sunny spots, elevated positions and places near people can all be valuable to different cats. A bed placed in the wrong location may be rejected even if the bed itself is comfortable.
Open vs enclosed
Some cats prefer open mats or bolstered beds; others seek covered caves, boxes or furniture gaps. Provide at least one retreat where the cat can avoid unwanted interaction.
Washability
Removable washable covers are practical for long-term use. Check manufacturer care instructions and ensure the item dries fully before returning it to use.
Access
For kittens, senior cats or cats with mobility issues, consider how high the entrance is and whether the surface moves when stepped on.
