Quick comparison
- Vertical vs horizontal
- Stable vs wobbly
- Preferred texture
- Useful location
- Enough length to stretch
Some cats stretch upward against vertical surfaces; others prefer horizontal or angled scratching. Offering more than one orientation can reveal preference more quickly than repeatedly replacing the same style.
A tall post that wobbles when used may be avoided. For vertical scratching, the structure should be stable enough for the cat to lean and stretch without tipping.
A beautiful scratcher hidden in an unused corner may lose to a sofa on a busy route. Place acceptable scratching surfaces near sleeping areas, room transitions or places where scratching already occurs.
Sisal, cardboard, carpet-like materials and wood textures feel different. Avoid assuming one material is universally preferred. Observe what the cat chooses and provide appropriate alternatives.
