A toy collection is only one part of enrichment. A more complete indoor setup gives cats options to climb, scratch, retreat, observe, play and rest in different parts of the home.
Indoor Cat Enrichment
Create different kinds of space
Floor area, vertical space and hidden space serve different purposes. A window perch, cat tree, box, tunnel and scratcher can create different choices even in a modest room.
Spread resources thoughtfully
In multi-cat homes, putting every important resource in one location can create competition. Separating play, rest, scratching, food, water and litter resources can improve access and choice.
Change the environment cheaply
Move a box, open a safe paper bag with handles removed, rotate toys, shift a tunnel, or move a scratcher to a more-used route. Enrichment does not always require buying something new.
Keep the cat in control
Provide opportunities, not forced participation. The ability to retreat and rest is as important as the ability to play.
