Senior-friendly thinking
- Lower
- Slower
- Stable
- Easy to reach
- Easy to stop
A cat that once loved fast chase play may still enjoy a slower version kept closer to the floor. A cat that likes climbing may benefit from shorter steps or easier access to preferred resting places.
Slippery surfaces, large gaps and high jumps can make an otherwise appealing activity difficult. Stable rugs, lower routes and reachable scratchers can reduce unnecessary effort.
Reduced play, reluctance to jump, hiding, or other behaviour changes can have many causes. If a senior cat’s activity changes noticeably, discuss it with a veterinarian rather than assuming it is simply age.
Novelty can be useful, but familiar toys and resting places may also be reassuring. Introduce changes gradually and preserve access to known resources.
