Simple pattern
Stalk → short chase → pause → catch → reset.
Wand-style play works because the person can make movement unpredictable. The same toy can behave like something skittering across the floor, hiding behind a chair, pausing, or briefly moving through the air.

Movement matters more than speed
Constant high-speed movement is not the only way to hold attention. Use starts, stops, partial concealment and changes of direction. Give the cat realistic opportunities to catch the toy rather than making every chase unwinnable.
Protect hands and feet
Keep hands, ankles and toes out of the game. The moving attachment should be the target. This is particularly important with kittens that are still learning what kind of play gets reinforced.
Treat attachments as consumable parts
Feathers, fabric strips and connectors wear. Inspect them closely and replace or retire them before pieces come loose. Linear toys should be stored securely after supervised use.
Use the room
A hallway, doorway, box edge or chair leg can create visual breaks and turns without buying additional equipment. Avoid routes that encourage unsafe leaps or collisions on slippery surfaces.
